INSOUMISES

Rosa Parks, Simone Veil and Gloria Steinem share a common thread: they challenged the established order of their time and fought for greater freedom, equality and women’s rights. In very different contexts, each chose to resist, speak out and act rather than accept the limits imposed on her.

In my work, I have deliberately silenced each of these women by covering their mouths. This is a symbol of all the forces that sought to silence them. Yet, even when they were prevented from speaking, they continued to resist, to act and to make their voices heard by every means available to them.

Rosa Parks became an icon of the fight against racial segregation when, in 1955, she refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Her act of resistance helped spark the Montgomery Bus Boycott and became a powerful symbol of the American Civil Rights Movement.

Simone Veil fought for women’s freedom and reproductive rights. As France’s Minister of Health, she defended the law legalising abortion in 1975, despite fierce opposition. She later became the first woman elected President of the European Parliament.

Gloria Steinem devoted her life to advancing women’s rights and gender equality. A journalist, writer and feminist activist, she co-founded Ms. magazine in 1972 with Dorothy Pitman Hughes, creating an influential platform for feminist voices and issues that had long been overlooked. She became one of the leading figures of the American feminist movement.Three women. Three struggles. Three forms of resistance that challenged the world they lived in and helped open the way for those who came after them.
